Investor search for two insolvent Berlin publishing houses

Insolvency administrator Prof. Rattunde continues business operations of Rogner & Bernhard and Haffmans & Tolkemitt / Publisher of Julian Assange, Douglas Adams and Yoko Ono /

BERLIN, 14 JANUARY 2016. The first interested parties have already come forward in the case of the insolvent Berlin publishers Rogner & Bernhard and Haffmans & Tolkemitt. Following last year’s slump in sales, the two sister publishers filed for insolvency at Charlottenburg district court on 11 December. The publishers’ operations are currently being continued under the supervision of the provisional insolvency administrator Prof. Rolf Rattunde of the Berlin law firm LEONHARDT RATTUNDE, who most recently acted as administrator for the insolvency protection proceedings of Suhrkamp Verlag and supported the company in drawing up an insolvency plan for conversion into a stock corporation.

“We are currently looking for investors who would like to take over and expand the two Berlin-based publishing houses and their publishing programmes, each of which has around eight new publications each year. Well-known authors such as Julian Assange, Douglas Adams and Yoko Ono as well as the high-circulation series “Make Love”, which was also broadcast as a TV format on ZDF, make the sister publishers unique," explained the provisional insolvency administrator Prof. Rolf Rattunde.

The Rogner & Bernhard GmbH & Co. KG is an independent publishing house founded in 1968. It had a turnover of one million euros in 2014. Haffmans & Tolkemitt GmbH, founded in 2009, had a turnover of around 550,000 euros in 2014 and took over the shares in Rogner & Bernhard from the former owners Jakob Augstein and Johanna von Rauch in 2012.

In addition to the managing director, each publisher employs two employees. Tasks such as graphics and production were outsourced to freelancers or service providers. The spring programme is currently being prepared. In addition to searching for investors and initial discussions with interested parties, the insolvency administration also has to clarify complex legal issues such as book and film rights.
